Why choose SaltPans Flor de Sal?

Flavour

The way SaltPans Flor de Sal is produced makes it rich in minerals such as calcium, potassium, and magnesium. It is this specific composition, which gives it its distinctive flavour. A flavour, which is a world away from common table salt and other, mechanically processed sea salts.

Sun Dried
SaltPans Flor de Sal occurs naturally on the surface of traditional salt pans in the Algarve, Portugal, in perfect weather conditions, and dries under the hot summer sun.
Like other farmers, the owners of the salt works, are dependant on the right weather conditions for a good crop of SaltPans Flor de Sal - gentle winds, combined with sunshine. If conditions are not good (less sunshine/ strong wind) their yields will be poor.

Hand Harvested
These highly prized, delicate flakes of sea salt are carefully skimmed by hand. As they harvest, skilled artisans know from the sound when the salt flowers have bloomed to perfection.

The cream of the crop, SaltPans Flor de Sal is the thin, glistening layer of flaky crystals that forms at the surface of the traditional saltpans. Only a very small percentage of the salt produced in the saltpans is Flor de Sal the rest, which falls to the bottom of the saltpans, is traditional, hand processed sea salt.

Traditional & Sustainable
This labour intensive method of production has been in use for hundreds of years and has minimal impact on the local environment.

Unlike most sea salts, which are harvested mechanically, the traditional way that SaltPans Flor de Sal is gathered creates a very small ecological footprint within the protected nature reserves of Portugals East Algarve coast
